Updated Personal Site Launch!

Launched! This will now be the home of my portfolio, my life, and my thoughts. Through my personal website I hope to share and communicate about web culture and new media.

I decided not to write under a facade website name for the single reason that I want my work to show who I am. Matt Brett wrote a great article a while back to freelancers and entrepreneurs describing the positives of combining your life and your career on a website. It is a great way to network with fellow tech enthusiasts and web entrepreneurs.

Check out my updated about/porfolio/press pages. This year will be packed full of exciting new ventures for me, and I want to get as much input as I can. So keep posted for all the latest details!

PS – Thanks for all my new friend requests on my list of social networks. Feel free to add me 🙂

The Future of Wireless Devices and Social Collaboration

I am happy to read that Wireless power is now a possible reality. Think of how great it would be to walk in your room or office and just being in the surrounding location to have your cell phone, blackberry, ipod, etc. to wirelessly charge. From current models and drawings, the device used to transmit this energy voltage looks a little bit scary; consisting of bulky copper coils. But just like anything else, a company such as Powercast will hopefully refine the kinks and make it safe and accessible to household and businesses by late 2008 like promised. I might need a release date tattoo to convince me though.

Another inevitable future concept that seems very promising is harnessing social networking data as we know it to a new level. It is a project by Microsoft called Photosynth (check out the preview). I would definitely recommend watching the astounding prototype demonstration video. Imagine an online environment (demonstrated in the cathedral example) where developers can finally tie in flickr images with comments, tags, detailed information, and exact place of picture taken tied to a pool of people put on a feasible platform. One would be able to “walk” in this mosaic similar to Google Maps Street View on a larger scale. Now this is the future of social networking baby!

Watch out Graphic Design Student Association!

I am pleased to say I am now an officer of the Graphic Design Student Association. The plans are in works to collaborate with fellow artists and visit small and large media companies in Orlando to discuss great opportunities. I am very excited!

On a related note, I was looking back at my 5th Grade Yearbook (when I quite the pimp) and saw my picture. Under it said “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and I wrote Graphic Designer. As well as being Jack of all trades, I am so proud of myself for focusing my craft for what I love doing and passionate about building a lucrative company around the industry.

On another note, the guys that film the popular podcast Photoshop TV shoot about ten minutes away from my house. I think it is about time to visit and see what they have been up to and tell them what a big fan I am. 🙂 I’m out!

Becoming a Semi-Famous Internet Star: Part II

If you check out today, April 10, 2007, you will see my little face on the front page of EbaumsWorld.com for the second time. Thanks Becky for telling me! OK, there is a story behind this. This is taken from my blog post from “Becoming a Semi-Famous Internet Star: Part I” about a year ago:

I was going though my old VHS tapes of when I was younger and found a hilarious memory of my childhood. My mom said she submitted this same tape to America’s Funniest Home Videos in 1991, but only to be rejected weeks later.

I thought since viral media was becoming huge on the internet video clip database websites such as Ebaums, YouTube, etc; I thought I could have a shot of it with this one.

After editing and adding the effect quickly in Windows Movie Maker, I posted it to a list of sites to see how far it would go. The list includes YouTube, iFilm, Web Junk 20, Myspace, MuchoSucko, Digg, Break, and a few others.

People at first on YouTube picked it up and commented how funny it was. At first I was a little reluctant because I wasn’t getting many views or popularity as I hoped for at first. Then I noticed it started to spread on other minor sites and people began posting duplicates all over.

It wasn’t until about the third week a friend of mine called me up and noticed my video I showed him on the front page of Ebaums World. Whether you love them or hate them, you can’t deny the outstanding amount of traffic the site gets.

And there in all its glory Ebaums infamously placed their watermark on my video without my approval whatsoever, which they probably picked up from another site. I wasn’t upset or anything, I was actually happy the video spread onto the homepage and then placed in the extreme section. I did receive royalties and won a $500 March Funny Video Contest.

In school, people that have known me for a long time and recognized me when I was younger, would call me Ebaums World kid, and even strangers couldn’t believe it was me.

Then, on May 9th, G4 2006 E3 Coverage featured a television advertisement for Ebaums World with my video in the main commercial. (If anyone has a clip of this, please let me know!)

I don’t usually post these type of articles, but I just wanted to let you readers know how easy and extremely fast a idea can spread around the internet, just in this first month. I know this is nothing new, but until you experience something like this personally you have no idea.

The viewer count absolutely amazes me, and little things like finding it on peoples MySpaces and Blogs all over the world with people posting it around saying “Hey, I thought you would find this funny” makes me happy to this day.

Therefore, I encourage everyone to post anything you think is worthwhile to the net, you never know, it might even make you too an internet star…

This is the original Big Wheel Wreck Video.

This is the new edited montage of Bad Day featuring my video. Until today I had no idea Ebaum’s Staff collected it.

I found that others have spread the joy of my face plant, Google Video Mirror, Metacafe Mirror, YouTube Mirror I II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and more. Love you guys!

PS – No I am not a girl, or someone’s niece, or my dad didn’t post it to the internet (I did), or in that case I wasn’t ugly. 🙂 I don’t think my dad knew when he was filming it what actually happened at that time, but he saw that I was fine and got up… haha.

[UPDATE] In order to prove it is my video, Ebaums emailed me this:

Congratulations! Your content was recently featured on eBaumsworld.com. This automatically qualifies you for our payout structure.

In order to ensure proper delivery of cash prizes, we must verify your mailing address and that you are the original creator of the material. There are several ways to accomplish this.

The first is to send us an extended version (2-3 minutes longer) of the clip you submitted or other footage that will prove you were involved in the original creation of the clip.

Also, if your face is displayed in the original submitted video clip, you can send a new clip of yourself on camera speaking your name outloud and claiming ownership of the video. We can verify your identity by comparing the two clips.

Lastly, you can send original VHS, MiniDV, Hi8, or other media to our PO Box. The address is:

eBaum’s World
**** Brighton Henrietta Townline Road
Rochester, NY 14623

If for some reason you can not provide any of the above methods, please contact us with details of your problem and we will come up with an alternate method. Thanks!

I posted the extended (unedited) version with my name watermarked on it. This version can be viewed here. 🙂

UCF Astronomy Tower Exploration!

OK, I know it has been a while since I last updated and I wont make a habit of it anymore. I want to catchup on all the interesting things I have done this month. Hope everyone had a Hoppy Easter full of candy and coding.

UCF has one of the three University Astronomy towers in the nation. So I thought I would pay a visit to explore the deep space. I have always been interested in science and space even since I was little. Some of my earliest memories include playing with the telescopes and magnetic spinning tops at the local “Earth and Space“, “Noodle Kidoodle“, and hobby shoppes. I still to this day get a thrill when I find anything that has to do with science and space.

Our Astronomy class went as a team to the dark side of the campus off a short unpaved road near the “hidden forest” at UCF. Close to where they shot the very popular independent movie “The Blair Witch Project“. The huge tower has one giant telescope powered by computer and used mostly for research and deep space photography. Outside included some smaller telescopes pointed at Saturn, Pollux, and Andromeda. I was able to snap a few shots through the telescope with my digital camera, they turned out amazingly well. Everyone was shocked to find out my handy dandy Canon Powershot took such great pictures. More to come, stay tuned.

Today, the CEO Knights and I had the privilege to meet up with the founder of Tijuana Flats, Brian Wheeler. He is a very motivational leader who turned his small restaurant into a huge franchised multi-million dollar success story. Tijuana Flats is a popular fun national restaurant franchise.

You can read the full article on the CEO Knights website. I love learning the biography of entrepreneurs and interesting success stories, definitely worth a read.
